All in a Day – Celebrating Community

I have had the pleasure of working with an organization since the beginning of the year on Leading Through Change.  During that time, they tackled Trust, Accountability, Conflict, Commitment and Results, key elements of a team that can easily go sideways during organizational change.   Change is hard.  We show up differently depending on how difficult the change is for us personally. Sometimes with change, not everyone gets on the bus and we lose people that we thought were once the glue.  Ralph Ellison, American novelist, literary critic, and scholar said, “It takes a deep commitment to change and an even deeper commitment to grow.”

Last week I had the opportunity to attend this organization’s annual retreat, which was all about celebrating!   Identifying the wins and recognizing each and every employee.  There was even outdoor play time!  I even tried my hand at horseshoes….. Hmmm.

While I facilitated a segment of the retreat, I actually got to be a guest for the other parts of the day, which allowed me to watch every employee share camaraderie, laughter, stories and their commitment to this organization they are immensely proud to be a part of.

No matter what their roles, their love for providing “a safe place to call home” to thousands is first and foremost.   They know their purpose.   They find meaning and fulfillment every day.  You can see it as their eyes light up when they speak about their work, when they see the impact they are making in the community, and when they acknowledge one another.

Though change is hard, this organization has embraced it! In her closing comments about what sets this organization apart, the president encouraged every employee to say “Me” to that question.  It is the individuals inside this organization that are transforming lives and strengthening communities.  Every day.
